May 19, 2021

Looking for state-of-the-art robot kits for adults? Look no further. Otto DIY ranks among the best robot kits for adults, hobbyists, and enthusiasts.

Why Otto ranks among the best robot kits for adults

No matter if you’re a hobbyist, enthusiast, or a robotics engineer, Otto is among the best robot kits for adults. Otto robot kits are incredibly versatile. They are completely customizable, and even 3D printable.

All of our robotics kits for adults make for wholly immersive DIY projects. Builder Kits provide the tools, mechanics and electronics for assembly, while Maker’s Kits equip you for 3D printing Otto’s external parts.

Construct Otto with simple mechanical and electronic engineering, or design your own custom build to impress the community. You can deploy modern 3D modeling tools to personalize Otto, and then use simple or advanced coding to bring it to life. Get help from makers, borrow from our library of programs, or write unique codes in simple or advanced programming languages.

Keep reading to discover 5 reasons why Otto is among the best robot kits for adults, hobbyists, and enthusiasts alike.

1. Otto is 3D printable and highly customizable

What really sets robot kits for adults apart from the competition? Is it the functionality, or the price tag? Perhaps, it’s the assembly process, or the actual appearance of the robot?

At Otto DIY, we imagine it’s a combination of all the above and more. And with you reading this, we’d wager you are looking for something beyond the average robotics kit. You’re looking for more than just a toy; you want an engaging project to test your engineering and coding skills.

This is why the dream behind Otto robot kits includes 3D printing. We want to promote the skills of tomorrow through STEAM and EdTech robotics. Moreover, we want Otto Builders to have the opportunity to contribute to an open source community robotics project unlike any other.

With Otto robotics kits, you can 3D print a wide range of external parts for Otto. Print standard components to custom add-ons to make your bipedal robot truly unique. Otto’s library of free STL files has everything to get started. Find more files in our community, or design your own.

2 . Fun to assemble solo, or with friends and family

Whether you choose to 3D print Otto or build Otto from the box, the standard assembly process takes roughly 1-2 hours. If printing, include 8 hours (or less, with a high-end 3D printer) to make Otto’s external parts.

Otto’s easy-to-follow instructions guide you through construction. Here, you don’t have to worry about any complicated mechanical or electronic engineering. There is no soldering required, and you can connect all motors, wires, and circuitry with a simple screwdriver (included in our kits).

This places Otto among the best robot kits for adults, even for projects with young family members and friends. Otto robot kits are designed so all ages can enjoy robotic assembly, from kids and teens, to families, and the classroom.

3. You choose how to code Otto and what commands it carries out

Want your Otto to retrieve objects? There’s a program for that. Maybe you’d like Otto to patrol the house and avoid obstacles along the way? There’s a code for that, too. Otto can walk (or drive, if on wheels), dance, make noises, show emotions, and even synchronize with other Ottos.

Write text-based code for Otto in Arduino (C/C++), or use Blockly for a more beginner-friendly, visual coding experience. Otto is an Arduino robot, but you can also program it in more advanced coding languages like Python.

4. Command Otto by remote control

Our standard Otto robot kits are remote controlled via Bluetooth on any Android or iOS device. Otto’s remote controls start with 20 programmable movements, 12 gestures with sounds, and a number of codes and modes of interaction.

Direct your robot to move forward or backward, side to side, turn left and right, shake its legs, and even moonwalk. It can display different color LED lights to show different emotions, and make a wide range of sounds or play music (with the right expansions).

Set Otto to act as an alarm, follow you around the house, or whatever programs you can develop or borrow from our libraries. We’ve even seen an Otto robot with voice recognition before, so we know that anything you can dream, you can build.

5. Build, share, and compete with a thriving Builders’ Community

Finally, why tell you when we can show you how Otto is among the best robot kits for adults. Otto’s Builders’s Community is constantly surprising us with new, innovative, and impressive takes on Otto.

Most recently, we’ve met OttoRC, a Master Builder’s work to make Otto radio controlled. Rather than Bluetooth controls, this Otto would receive commands from an analogue controller, such as a joystick.

Then, you have “Bork”: Otto on wheels, equipped with lights, music, and custom extendable arms. Bork was brought to life using Blockly, and, we must say, looks to have been exciting to dream up, build, and program.

Another recent submission that shows the versatility of Otto is OttoDAR. This Builder’s take on Otto involves an auto detection ranging system. Think of it as sonar. It has a rotating head, a new extension, sensors and programming to scan and report on its surroundings.
