A Simple Robot for Beginners and Experts | Otto

April 7, 2021

Get to know Otto: a simple robot with a lot of personality. Otto is easy to construct, simple to program, and adaptive to any robot enthusiast. Deploy Otto just for fun, or use this simple robot as an EdTech solution in STEM classrooms.

The Simple Robot on a Mission

Meet Otto, a simple robot with a lot of versatility. Otto has been trotting the globe a lot lately, and has made its way into homes and classrooms the world over. This simple robot has been dressing to impress in our Inventors’ Program, recently winning awards, and undergoing constant development in Otto’s Builder’s Community.

Otto has even been recently selected to take part in the Impact TechEd Accelerator Remote Schooling Initiative sponsored by the European Union. With this, Otto At Home launches, with Otto Builder’s Kits going to support hundreds of students across the EU. These participants will have access to Otto Academy for learning the fundamentals of coding, engineering, and design.

That means Otto is gearing up for another mission, and we have time to tell you all about what makes this simple robot tick. Keep reading to discover more about how Otto is the simple robot with limitless potential for hobbyists, enthusiasts, edtech and STEAM learning.

The DIY Kits: Assemble your own robot

Otto DIY brings the world of engineering, robotics, and technology to life for all ages, beginners and experts alike. Our simple robot kits are easy to assemble straight out of the Builders’ Kits, or you can opt for a Makers’ Kit for 3D printing all of the external parts that make up Otto.

Easy-to-follow instruction manuals make the construction of Otto quick and fun. It requires no more than 1-2 hours of assembly for Otto’s electrical components and casing. There is no soldering or complicated electronic engineering to worry about.

All you need is a Phillips screwdriver, some AA batteries, and Otto can be ready for programming in no time. With 4 micro Servo motors, sensors, and buzzers, Otto showcases the connection between code and action, mechanical components, and electronic engineering.

3D print Otto in under 8 hours

If opting to 3D print Otto, the Makers’ Kits come equipped with all the resources you need. Download Otto’s free STL files to print its external parts (from its head to its casing, arms, and legs).

3D print additional parts, or customize various design elements to give your Otto a truly unique personality. What Otto becomes is limited only by your imagination.

It only takes 8 hours (or less, with a high-end 3D printer) to completely 3D print Otto, making for the perfect at-home or classroom project. When printed, simply engineer your electronics, integrate these with your robot, and the coding can begin.

Deploy simple programming with Blockly

Otto supports programming languages for beginners and experts in coding. At the basic to intermediate level, deploy Otto Blockly (a stand-alone, block-based visual coding language) or Otto Scratch AI (server-based).

Visual coding like this (basically programming with GUI) makes for a great introduction to programming. Blockly not only allows learners to move more quickly through a lot of code, but also to grasp complex concepts without the frustration that comes with typed programming.

Blockly also allows users to see more advanced C/C++ command lines, algorithms, and functions from Arduino alongside the graphical blocks. This is great for quickly getting experience in programming and computational thinking.

Take it a step further, and Otto supports Python and other advanced programming languages for more experienced developers. In addition, Otto is completely open source, so you have access to all of the libraries, apps, and functions in open development.

Discover Otto Academy

Otto Academy is our online learning management system (LMS), stock full of courses and educational materials for the STEAM classroom. Aiming to support distance learning, this LMS is also here for anybody simply looking to learn how to build, code, design, and engineer Otto.

This simple robot and its Academy helps learners discover 3D printing and engineering, mathematical thinking, problem solving and design skills. Learn more about CAD and 3D modeling, coding, apps for robotic process automation, creative design, and more.
