Learn to Command Otto: the Remote Control Robot Kit for Adults

An engaging project for hobbyists and enthusiasts alike, Otto DIY makes for the perfect remote control robot kit for adults. Build Otto from scratch (by 3D printing its external parts and acquiring the electronics), or opt for a Builder’s Kit.

Otto Builders’ Kits come with everything you need to build your remote control robot kit. Choose between simple designs, or build the modular robot of your dreams. Otto is highly configurable and customizable, while remaining kid-friendly for play in the classroom or at home.

Join other adults, hobbyists, and educators around the globe in building, coding, and controlling your very own robot. Control Otto and create dances via our Bluetooth app, or deploy voice control to give Otto commands.

With Otto, more is possible by the day. Join us in this post to discover our remote control robot for adults, teachers, kids, teens, moms, dads, and students.

Remote control your robot via Android and iOS devices

The way Otto’s remote control works is simple. Our app for control supports Android, iOS, and is compatible with Arduino (and Blockly). When you’ve downloaded the app, the first step is to turn on Otto and then connect your Bluetooth device to the robot.

After connecting, Otto is ready to play. The user interface displays Otto’s range of commands, a selection of various dance steps. Experiment with each command to find the perfect set of dance moves for your Otto.

Next, you have remote control over the robot’s speed, with commands for Otto to move quicker or slower during each process. The remote control also allows you to command the robot to beep, buzz, whirr, and make a variety of robot sounds.

Otto can even make emotional gestures. Use the remote control to command a range of gestures and responses. It can look happy, or it can look sheepish. Otto can faint, or fall in love. It can even look grumpy, or it can simply be looking to crack a few jokes. The controls are yours.

Deploy voice control to command this robot

Looking for a voice command robot kit for adults? Skip using the phone as a remote control, and use your voice. Otto can support voice recognition, allowing you to set voice commands for Otto to carry out.

Want a demo? Just have a watch of the quick 1-minute video below. With simple voice commands, Otto moves, dances, beeps, and plays. Decide on which vocal commands and movements you want Otto to follow. Otto will wait for you to voice its next command.

While Otto is no Alexa (yet), we have found the most reasonable and affordable solution to make voice recognition with Otto possible. In fact, it’s only a $20 USD add-on.

The speech recognizer can recognize up to 22 simple commands, like ‘start’, ‘stop’, ‘play music’, ‘dance’, and more. Simple programming and libraries are already provided, so you can quickly get this robot kit geared up for action.

Use controls to make Otto walk, dance, jump, and play

What more can this remote control robot kit for adults do? Why not watch another video and see for yourself.

In this spotlight, there are 20 programmable movements, 12 gestures with sounds, and a number of codes and modes of interaction. See Otto walk forward and backward, turn right or left, shake its legs, and even moonwalk.

Want your Otto to play about and make noise as if it’s super happy? There’s a code for that. Want to see victory poses, love, or confusion? Command Otto to do all of this and more, including modes for alarm, following, retrieval, obstacle avoidance, or whatever you can code.

Write unique programs for Otto in Arduino, Blockly, Python, and more

Otto supports Arduino (C/C++), Blockly (for beginners), Python, and other advanced coding languages. This is the real fun part about this robot kit for adults. Great as a family project or a classroom experiment, Otto caters to all levels of programming experience.

Otto’s versatility makes it the perfect robot kit for all ages. It’s fun for everyone from professional developers to STEAM educators, and parents introducing robotics to children.

Blockly serves as a user-friendly, visual block-based coding language. It also displays lines of text-based code alongside the visual blocks. This helps for both learning and teaching visual and text-based programming.

For expert programmers and developers, put your skills to the test with Python and other advanced coding languages. Take the challenge and make your own programs to share or compete with Otto’s Builder’s Community.

Build a completely customizable, modular robot

Otto is a completely open source remote control robot kit. Everything from the STL files for 3D printing Otto’s parts to its library of programs exist in the public domain.

Circuitry and main boards are easy to connect, with no need for soldering or complicated electronic or mechanical engineering. Add your own personal touches to Otto’s design, or start with the basics knowing that you can always enhance Otto later.
