The HP Robots Otto Remix Challenge invites makers and designers to create 3D printable upgrades, characters, and expansions for the Otto robot platform.
The maker community thrives on remixing ideas. A design starts somewhere, but its real magic appears when others modify it, improve it, and turn it into something unexpected. That spirit of creativity is exactly what inspired the HP Robots Otto Remix Challenge, now live on Printables.
Meet Otto: A Robot Built for Creativity
Otto started as an open-source robot project created to help people learn robotics by building, coding, and experimenting. Over the years it has grown into a modular robotics platform used by makers, students, and educators around the world.
The HP Robots version expands that vision with a flexible ecosystem of modules, accessories, and upgrades. Its design encourages experimentation, making it ideal for 3D printing communities where customization and remix culture are part of everyday creativity.

At its core, Otto is:
- 🤖 Modular and expandable
- 🧠 Designed for learning robotics and coding
- 🖨 Built around customizable 3D printable parts
- 🎓 Used by educators and makers alike
This combination of robotics, education, and maker culture makes Otto a perfect platform for a remix design challenge.
The Printables Contest
Participants are invited to design a 3D printable remix for Otto that changes how the robot looks, works, or what it can do.
The goal is to create original designs that expand Otto’s possibilities while keeping its recognizable character.
Your design could be:
- A functional upgrade
- A new accessory or tool
- A mechanical module or expansion
- A character-themed version of Otto
- A completely new device using Otto parts
The only requirement is that the design must be 3D printable and inspired by the Otto robot platform.
Design Categories
To help guide participants, the challenge includes two broad (and non-exclusive) categories.
1. 🔧 Expansions
Design upgrades that expand Otto’s functionality. Examples include:
- New mechanisms or propulsion systems
- Sensor mounts or hardware integrations
- Modular attachments and accessories
- Devices built using Otto components

2. 🎭 Characters
Turn Otto into something completely new. If it’s creative and Otto-inspired, it belongs here. Think of:
- Movie or game inspired characters
- Creative skins and costumes
- Funny personalities or themed designs
- Decorative or expressive add-ons

3. 📟Devices
Build something cool new using Otto’s parts, like:
- New robots or systems
- Games and gadgets
- Third party components
- Other platforms modules compatibillity

- + 2000 Prusameters
🥉 Third Place
- HP Robots Starter Creator Kit
- + 1200 Prusameters
No Kit? No Problem.
You do not need to own an Otto kit to participate.
To make the challenge accessible, HP Robots provides all the necessary design resources, including:
- STEP files and CAD models
- STL files from existing kits
- Blueprints and mechanical dimensions
- Documentation for the electronic components
- These resources allow anyone with a 3D modeling tool to start designing immediately.
Beginner Friendly Design Tools
If you are new to 3D design, there are beginner-friendly tools available.
One recommended option is Makers Empire, a 3D design platform often used in classrooms to introduce students to design thinking, robotics, and 3D printing. It allows users to easily modify Otto models and export printable files.
This makes the challenge accessible even to younger makers or people starting their journey into 3D modeling.
Special Deal for Contest Participants
To support makers who want to test their designs in real life, HP Robots is offering a special contest promotion. Participants can purchase HP Robots kits with a limited-time discount:
25% discount (VAT included) +Free shipping. Use coupon code: CONTEST
30% discount (USD price, VAT excluded). Use coupon code: Code: CONTESTUS
This allows participants to build and test their designs on a real Otto robot platform.
Want to Program Your Otto?
If your design includes electronics or robotics behavior, Otto can be programmed using several platforms.
Options include:
- HP Robots Web Blocks coding platform
- MicroPython using Thonny IDE
- Arduino IDE or other ESP32-compatible environments
This flexibility allows beginners to start with visual programming while advanced users can build sophisticated robotics behaviors.
Why Remix Challenges Matter?
Remix contests are a powerful way to grow open design communities. They encourage experimentation, knowledge sharing, and creative collaboration.
Previous Otto remix challenges have produced dozens of imaginative variations ranging from new robot mechanisms to artistic character designs, showing just how far the community can push a simple platform.
The new HP Robots Otto Remix Challenge continues that tradition, bringing the Printables maker community into the mix.
Join the Challenge
Whether you’re a robotics expert, a 3D designer, a student, or just someone with a wild idea for a robot, this challenge is your opportunity to build something unique.
