Otto - The DIY Robot for All Ages and Robot Enthusiasts

March 31, 2021

Discover Otto, the DIY Robot for hobbyists, enthusiasts, and educators. 3D Print Otto. Construct Otto. Program Otto, and give this DIY robot a personality of its own.

3D print, assemble, and program Otto: the DIY robot of tomorrow

Looking for an exciting DIY robot project? No matter if it’s your first robot kit, or the next, Otto makes a welcome companion to any home, classroom, or DIY projects in general.

The Otto DIY robot comes in either Maker Kits or Builder Kits and numerous designs to consider. Decide whether you want to 3D print the external parts for Otto, or simply order everything you need to get started immediately.

This DIY robot is 3D printable, buildable, programmable, and customizable. Otto follows controls directly from your mobile phone. Otto is even completely open source, meaning you have access to all the libraries, apps, and functions in Otto’s thriving Builders’ Community.

3D Print it yourself

Otto DIY robot Maker Kits provide all the resources you need for 3D printing Otto. Access the free STL files to print all of Otto’s external parts (from its head to its casing, arms, and legs).

All you need is 8 hours or less (reduce this by 50% if you have a high-range 3D printer), and your Maker Kit is ready for assembly. You can choose to 3D print additional parts, casing, eyes, new legs and arms, or whatever design elements you want to personalize on Otto.

This DIY robot can become whatever you imagine. Just see our write-up on Otto’s 2020 award in the Most Adaptable & Open Design category of the Distributed Design Awards. You’ll find how active and inspired our 3D printing enthusiasts and the DIY robot community has become.

Assemble it yourself

Whether you decide on an Otto Maker’s Kit or a Builder’s Kit (for a DIY robot without the 3D printing), your construction on Otto begins with easy-to-follow instructions.

Build the Otto DIY robot from scratch. With approximately 1-2 hours assembly time, and absolutely no soldering and no complicated electronic engineering, Otto quickly comes to life.

The 4 micro servo motors, sensors, and buzzers are all easy to connect by a Phillips screwdriver, and run on AA batteries. Simply engineer your electronics, integrate these with your robot, and then you’re ready for the final step. Giving Otto a personality!

Program it yourself

Otto’s DIY robot makes programming intuitive and fun too. If you’re completely new to programming or more on the amateur level, no worries.

For beginner and intermediate programmers, there is Otto Blockly (a stand-alone, block-based visual programming language), or Otto Scratch AI (server based). Both are perfect for absolute beginners, and will have you well on your way to learning more advanced coding in no time.

For more advanced programmers, you can also code Otto in Arduino in C/C++, or deploy Python and other advanced programming languages. No matter the age or level of technical knowledge, Otto adapts to you!

Customize it yourself

Otto’s DIY robot is also fully customizable, meaning you can personalize everything from how Otto looks to the coding controlling its actions.

Want a new body for your Otto? Design, customize, and 3D print new parts for Otto with modern computer 3D modeling tools. Redesign Otto’s head, face, casing, arms, and legs. Give Otto some unique aesthetics, like antennas, additional body parts, or anything you can imagine.

Write custom codes for your Otto to carry out, and then put your Otto to the test against the community. Looking for inspiration? Check out our 2020 Inventors’ Program to find loads of creative submissions and to meet our latest competition winner.
