Meet Seb: Otto DIY Inventor Program

October 14, 2021

Back in June, 2020 Otto DIY launched the Inventor Program to find Makers in their community to help create new Otto designs and products. The inventions were then voted on by our community to distinguish which inventors would go into the bootcamp. Completing the bootcamp rewarded the inventors 10% royalties on sales. And now, Otto DIY is happy to announce our second graduate Seb, who went above and beyond to make his invention a reality!

During the early days Seb came up with something unique. The very first iteration of what would be known as Otto Ninja. But it was called something very different at the time. Tutti Frutti.

You wouldn’t have known from seeing the design at first glance it’s similarity to Otto Ninja. What was similar had to do with the mechanics. Seb invented a new walking mechanism that was first of its kind. By utilizing 360 servos for the feet, and allowing these feet to spin, it ignited a forward compulsion for a controlled fast walking movement.

Seb reflected on this moment: “I realized with this new type of walking mechanism, the feet could also be used as wheels, and that’s when the concept of Ninja really took shape. Making the legs do a split, allowed for the simple transformation to a rover, which is what gave the name “Ninja.”

“OttoDIY experience with launching products on the market was where I was lacking as an inventor. What I appreciate the most from the inventor program was the support and process on how you launch a product on the global market. It’s quite a challenging process, and it was amazing to be part of the Otto DIY team and see how the process worked, at the same time, it allowed me to focus on inventing, which eliminated distractions.” explained Seb.

With minor walking adjustments and balancing techniques improved, Otto Ninja is now market ready. Otto DIY and Seb are now gearing up for pre-order sales which will go live Wednesday October 20th, 2021 and last until November 20th 2021. Shipments will then go out to pre-order backers in time for Christmas. Here is a sneak peak at the final product and all its glory!
